Major Project


In the book Salvation by author bell hooks love is described as a tool of liberation and how it can  be essential in the process of resisting oppression. This led me to my topic about how love can be freeing when you are loved correctly whether it be self, romantic, platonic or familial. She makes a claim that self love can be a defense against power structures and systems such as homophobia, racism and sexism in our society. Liberation is seen as an activity to achieve self-acceptance. When we live in a society that is built on discriminatory processes and systems it is hard to believe that we are able to enact change, whether it be within our communities or ourselves. 


  • Track 1 is Enchantment by Corinne Bailey Rae. This song describes the feeling of falling in love, how it takes over the mind like a spell and how the main character is losing their mental freedom and control.

  • Track 2 is Prototype by Outkast. This song speaks about a new love and discovering the sacrifices one is willing to make to stay with that person of interest.

  • Track 3 is Beautiful Me by Donnie. This song is about self love as black person and the issues and experiences that come along with that life and appreciating them.

  • Track 4 is The Heart pt 5.  by Kendrick Lamar. This song is a confession about experiences of oppression as a Black American and these issues being passed off as part of the culture.

  • Track 5 is Lucky Girl by Carlina. This song is specifically about discovering self- love, as well as speaking and manifesting good energy and positive things over your life.

  • Track 6 is Alright by Kendrick Lamar. This song addresses systemic issues black people face, racism and police brutality etc. and reassures the listener that we are gonna be “alright”.

  • Track 7 is Into the Red by James Blake. This song describes a relationship where someone puts their partner before themselves and unknowingly removes stress from their life, “freeing” them.

  • Track 8 is Scripture by Eartheater. The chorus repeats the phrase “I’m painting my own picture” which I believe is a prime example of self love and not being dictated by others which can be liberating.

  • Track 9 is Confidently Lost by Sabrina Claudio. This song is a big testament of self love about accepting where you are in life and expressing gratitude for what obstacles and triumphs allowed you to reach that point.

  • Track 10 is I lived by Onerepublic. This song describes the main character trying to break free from the negative mental state that they are trapped in and loving and appreciating the life that they have despite its challenges.

  • Track 11 is Get Me by Justin Bieber featuring Kehlani. This song is about wanting to understand someone else and having so much chemistry between each other, opening up and “getting” each other.

  • Track 12 is Freedom by Beyonce. This song is purposed around Black activism and other political influences and empowers and encourages the listener to keep marching despite the outcomes.

  • Track 13 is Cloud 9 by Donnie. This song is about the protagonist accepting themselves and understanding why they are the way they are, and ultimately liberating themselves from systemic oppressions placed on them. Being black and proud!

It is a time when children turn into young adults who have to be equipped with the right knowledge to succeed in this world outside of academics. Success in the world goes beyond academic achievement; it also depends on the ability to understand and navigate interpersonal relationships. It is important to not just teach academic-related material but also about healthy relationship dynamics. Motherly Love

  Wilhite1  Antwon Wilhite   Dr. Harris  English 2017-64187  30 April 2025  Motherly Love  For this project I want to focus on Eva and her motherly love. To me Eva as a mother  portrayed traits as someone who is protective and ruthless. Her motherhood is marked by  sacrifice, trauma, and survival in the face of systemic poverty and abandonment.  Eva way of showing love was sacrificial. I say this because Eva sacrifices her own body  by getting her leg amputated to collect insurance money. Which she uses to support her children  and keep the household running. With her being a sacrificial mother, I have chosen four songs to  go with that.
