The girlhood of Sula and Nel

My project focuses on the childhood friendship between Sula and Nel in the Novel “Sula”. I chose this topic because of all of the emotions and things they experienced together in their girlhood.

Pages 52-53

In these pages the author describes how Sula and Nel feel about finding someone they can always have around. This is kind of the first time in the book we get to understand exactly how Nel and Sula feel towards each other. It is explained that they both have many things that are different from their personalities to the way they were brought up to their different ways of living. Even though they have all of these things about themselves that are different they feel as though they can find comfort in each other and find joy in having someone who they consider their own. All of these songs represent always having someone there for you to count on and represents the fact that if they don’t have anyone else they have each other

  • Everything - Mary J. Blige

  • Anytime You Need a Friend - Mariah Carey

  • Ben - Michael Jackson

  • Count on Me - Whitney Houston and CeCe Winans

  • Best Friend- Brandy

Sula sticking up to the bullies scene

In this scene Sula sticks up to the Italian boys that bullies her and Nel along with other colored children. In this scene Sula cuts her finger to show a form of fearlessness and some sort of dominance to the boys so they will leave her and Nel alone allowing them to walk home alone in peace. These songs talk about being there for your friends and having their backs. Also these songs describe the strength of friendships.

  • I’ll Be There - Jackson 5

  • Best Friend - Missy Elliot ft. Aaliyah

  • That’s What Friends are For - Dionne Warwick

  • Just Us - DJ Khaled ft. Sza

  • Ribs - Lorde

Chicken Little’s Death scene

In this scene Chicken Little dies at the hands of Sula while Nel witnesses. After Sula goes to Shaderacs home to see if he witnessed anything that has happened, Shaderac then says “Always” to Sula. Sula interprets that as him confirming that he did see what happened to Chicken Little. Sula then goes back to Nel crying and tells her what Shaderac said, Nel then comforts Sula and tells her that they will not say anything about it and will act like they knew nothing about Chicken Little’s Death. The first two songs I’ve chosen to represent this scene focuses on friends sticking together through any hard times either of them may face alone or any hard times they may face together like thinking that Saderack witnessed Chicken Little’s death. However the last song I chose for this scene has a little bit of a different perspective. I chose the last song to represent how I thought how Sula felt when Nel was holding her while she was crying about Shaderac seeing. From what I know about how Nel and Sula feel about each other and how they feel about their friendship, I think Sula felt some type of comfort in knowing that she had Nel there to comfort her in this horrible time. In the course of the song it says “save your tears, it’ll be okay, all I know is you’re here with me” the course of this song could represent how Nel could have felt in that moment trying to comfort Sula.
