Love Triumphs All
Love as the resistance. That’s my selection. This video is angled to be split into two perspectives, the first being through the white lens and the second being through the eyes of someone black. This specific title and theme comes from deep rooted conversations regarding the novel Bell Hooks Salvation and the discussion with Dr. Walker in class. For decades we have allowed our society, which is aimed to support the white gaze, label us as a community. From stereotypes, violence, the justice system, and societal norms, just to name a few, African American people, our culture, traditions, and voices, have been reduced and placed in a box. This video is to express that love, genuine love, can be used to resist those labels. They deem us to be violent, they expect us to “riot”, they dismiss our success; but who are “they” to say anything and who are we to believe them. We can remove those gazes and begin to reclaim our space if we start to love. When i say love i don't mean the love that we see now, or even some of the love that we use as symbols of what love should look like in the public eye but love that has no boundaries, love that makes you want more, love that provides protection, both physical and mental. We have to start loving without burglar bars and in order to do so we have got to start understanding each other for who we actually are and not what everyone else is telling others what we are. It begins internally, no matter what race or ethnicity, love you; and when you do, start to love others. We often hear the slogan, “to be loved is to be seen,” yet do we actually see each other? Can you elaborate on the roots of black frustration, Easter Sunday traditions, or why the houses in African American parts of town seem so close together? To see us, to know us, is to say you matter to us.
