M.Rogers 1  Michelle Rogers  Dr. Jaleesa Harris  ENGL 2017-64187   April 21, 2025  Herculean task: Pulling me apart    My visual project is a digital art piece representing the struggle intersectionality causes for Black Queer women. I wanted the piece to convey the conflicting balancing act black women and queer black women go through and strength they have had to have to percivere.  The art shows a black woman in a weightlifting position called the Hercules hold. The woman is fractured and has two additional silhouettes grabbing the pillars on each side. Figure leaning left has curly natural hair, hoop earrings, and traditional makeup. The middle figure has a pillar behind her tied to her braids. The figure leaning right has straight hair, stud earrings, and plain makeup. Each pillar has a flag hanging from it: to the left, the black power fist on the African American tricolor, to the right, the Venus symbol on a field of pink, and in the...

Motherly Love

Wilhite1  Antwon Wilhite   Dr. Harris  English 2017-64187  30 April 2025  Motherly Love  For this project I want to focus on Eva and her motherly love. To me Eva as a mother  portrayed traits as someone who is protective and ruthless. Her motherhood is marked by  sacrifice, trauma, and survival in the face of systemic poverty and abandonment.  Eva way of showing love was sacrificial. I say this because Eva sacrifices her own body  by getting her leg amputated to collect insurance money. Which she uses to support her children  and keep the household running. With her being a sacrificial mother, I have chosen four songs to  go with that. Frist one is “The Greatest Man I Never Knew” by Reba McEntire while centered on  a father, it indirectly portrays the mother’s silent sacrifices in a distant home. The next song is  also by Reba McEntire “I’m a Survivor “this song is basically about a single mother making...

Love Triumphs All

Kewann Smith ENGL2017 Dr. Harris 30 April 2025                             Love Triumphs All  Love as the resistance. That’s my selection. This video is angled to be split into two perspectives, the first being through the white lens and the second being through the eyes of someone black. This specific title and theme comes from deep rooted conversations regarding the novel Bell Hooks Salvation and the discussion with Dr. Walker in class. For decades we have allowed our society, which is aimed to support the white gaze, label us as a community. From stereotypes, violence, the justice system, and societal norms, just to name a few, African American people, our culture, traditions, and voices, have been reduced and placed in a box. This video is to express that love, genuine love, can be used to resist those labels. They deem us to be violent, ...

Love and Liberty: “Duality of Parental Love” (Track list)

Avery Watson  English 2017   Dr. Harris  Monday & Wednesday 11:00-12:15  30 April 2025    Introduction:     For my mixtape I’ve decided to arrange a collection of songs that focus on parental love but more so is heavily devoted to the effects of an absent father and the unconditional love shown from single mothers because of it. Throughout the mixtape it concentrates on the crucial role these effects hold for children as they grow up with their only understanding of love being from these experiences. I will also be focusing on how these relationships can impact a child’s personal growth whether the outcome is positive or negative. The primary source I have chosen for my project is salvation by bell hooks, which I feel is a great text that aligns perfectly with each track I specifically chose for the overall tone I want the audience to experience. These tracks portray the struggles and follow the intricate emotions we see from not ...

Untitled Essay

Derrick Harris  5/30/25  Major Project ENGL 2017  My topic for my essay is how Sula experience freedom in a different way than normal people in  today’s world experience freedom. Sula thoughts on freedom were different from everyone  else’s view and the reason why is because she had basically pushed away from it and she felt like  it served her no purpose in using it. Sula was like that because she barely deals with people, and  the reason why is because she doesn’t really want conflict within people in her community. The  reason why Sula had got to this point is because of some of the bad choices she has made and  some of the different things she has grown up in and around in life. One sticking point about  Sula is that she is fighting for freedom of black women in her community she grew up in. Sula  was very helplessness also and the reason why is because some people looked at her different  because she was black woman...

Lesson Plan: Evolution of Black Love in Art

Erin Eiland April 27th, 2025 Dr. Harris Lesson Plan: Evolution of Black Love in Art Writing Proposal: Senior year is a critical point in any student's life. It is a time when children turn into young adults who have to be equipped with the right knowledge to succeed in this world outside of academics. Success in the world goes beyond academic achievement; it also depends on the ability to understand and navigate interpersonal relationships. It is important to not just teach academic-related material but also about healthy relationship dynamics. Struggle love is overrepresented in the black community which causes many children to grow up thinking that is all they can obtain. That is why teachers must introduce a new perspective of love, a healthy love. Starting by introducing untraditional ideas in texts such as Sula and Heartbreak Years will broaden students' perspectives on what they can choose for their lives. Sula is about a woman who despite all of the backlash she gets f...
